Have you ever thought of doing volunteer teaching? There are many English learning students that would love to have one phone call a week to practice their English with you. Classes can be done on Facebook, Google Hangouts, Zoom, or even Whatsapp. Volunteering is fun and can totally change your life, and that of a student's. 

I do some of my volunteer teaching on YouTube and Twitch.

Yasmine's Typical Volunteer Call

  • 1-10 minutes mark, we have small chat about them, their families and their work. (This gives them practice with answering basic everyday questions. I usually ask various things about the people in their home, for example: what ages, what is the matter with them, where do they work...etc. Repetition is key to confidence-building.)

  • 11-20 minutes mark, is the meat of the call. I have usually planned out what we are going to talk about as per the last time we chatted. For example, if we left off working on past tense, then I say, "Okay, Let's continue speaking in past tense. What did you do yesterday?". I try to only correct one mistake every five minutes. But I do take notes of mistakes while they are talking and build a follow up email from my notes.

  • 21-30 minutes mark, I set up for the next class. "Wow! You did great today. I want you to work on ______________. I am going to send you an email with things to work on thru the week, and we will discuss them on our next call."  Then after the call, I send them the topic of our next conversation and some questions that I plan to ask so they can start thinking about how to answer.
